The Whitsundays is the jewel in the crown of the Great Barrier Reef, one of the seven natural wonders of the world. The Whitsundays consists of approximately 74 islands, located off the central coast of Queensland, Australia. The area attracts in the vicinity of 700,000 visitors in any given year.

Here are four of the most amazing destinations in the Whitsundays:
Hamilton Island
This can be considered the commercial centre of the Whitsundays and is home to architectural wonder of the Hamilton Island Yacht Club and the newly opened Hamilton Island Golf Club. It is also host of the prestigious annual Audi Hamilton Island Race Week – a week of premium quality offshore yacht racing. Hamilton Island is one of the most popular yachting destinations in the Southern Hemisphere. It is the largest of the habitable islands in the area. There are plenty of activities to keep visitors busy – fishing, sea kayaking, helicopter flights over the Great Barrier Reef and of course snorkeling and scuba diving.

Airlie Beach
This resort-style coastal town is the gateway to the Whitsunday Islands and all that the Great Barrier Reef has to offer. Airlie Beach is well known as a hotspot for backpackers and if you’re looking for a party, you will find it here! The area is also welcoming to couples and families traveling. Nearby waterfalls and bushwalking trails are popular day trips. The Airlie Beach Lagoon is the place to be for families – with a designated kid’s area, BBQ facilities and lifeguards on duty. If you’re on your way to one of the Whitsunday Islands, make sure you stop to check out what Airlie Beach is all about.

Hayman Island
This island is home to Australia’s most awarded five star resort. If you’re looking for a luxurious, indulgent escape – this is it. Hayman Island sets the standard for service and hospitality. It has recently been reopened for business after closing for five months for extensive repairs and refurbishment. There is no better time to visit Hayman! The fishing opportunities are second to none. The clean waters surrounding the island are home to Coral Trout, Sweetlip, Sea Perch, Red Emperor, Trevally and Cod. To take luxury to the next level, pay a visit to Spa Hayman.

Whitehaven Beach
This beach is the most photographed beach in Australia, for good reason! It is ranked as one of the top 10 beaches in the world and has been named as Queensland’s most beautiful Beach by Keep Australia Beautiful. The 7km stretch of stunning white sand is made up of 98% pure silica – far above the requirement for glass making. Hill Inlet is a stunningly beautiful cove at the north end of Whitehaven. At low tide, a spectacular fusion of turquoise water and white sand is created. Tongue Point offers the best view of this natural wonder. Be sure to charge your camera battery for this one!
